Dead Presidents, Iraq, etc. 1/2/2007 9:31:00 PM By Simbey I don't normally write about Iraq because everyone else does. When isn't there something about Iraq on the news? Just last night, I watched people standing in the rain in Seattle "protesting" the war by holding candles or whatever with soldiers' pictures on them. Yup, that's going to stop the war. So it was just a few days ago that Saddam was executed. You'd think I'd be the last person on Earth to give a care, but you know what? I actually feed saddened by Saddam's execution. I never had the pleasure of meeting Saddam, but I bet he was decent enough. I don't think he deserved to die, and after reflecting on recent events, I also don't believe we should have wasted all this time, money, and lives on deposing him and trying to clean up the mess after we removed him. And now he's dead. Yup, Saddam is dead, and what has changed? What was the point? Iraq was just doing its own thing and minding its own business until March, 2003. Osama bin Laden was not in Iraq. Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction. I would even go so far as to say Iraq was a prosperous, happy nation until we blew it up. So to all the soldiers who have fought so hard to bring "peace" and "democracy" to Iraq, and to all the soldiers who think they've been fighting for anyone's "freedom," you have all wasted your time, and to those who've died or lost limbs in combat, you died or lost limbs in vein. You are fighting for no one's freedom. This war is ridiculous. If we just pull out all the troops now, order will be reestablished naturally in Iraq by the insurgents. Will Iraq get a new dictator? Of course! Why do we keep trying to convince ourselves that's bad for them? Some societies prefer autocracies. Why shouldn't we let them have their rule in their own land their own way? Not the only dead president Just days before Saddam's execution, ex-president Gerald Ford died, likely of natural causes. Seeing how ex-president George Bush Sr. is now the next ex-president in line to die (in terms of age), it occurred to me that, with the exception of Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford was the last president for the time being whose death anyone is going to mourn. As far as I know, Jimmy Carter was probably a decent president, so when he dies he will probably have a respectable funeral. On the other hand, when George Bush Sr. dies, a lot of people are going to remember Desert Storm, and so many will be indifferent to his death. He'll have it the best, though. When Bill Clinton dies, I know I certainly won't shed a tear. How many other Americans also won't? Where do you even begin by listing Clinton's mistakes? Let's see, there's the war against Serbia (see "We bombed the wrong side"), the pointless Clinton-Lewinski sex crap that cost millions, and the antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft. Clinton was eight years of death, sex, and pointlessnes. And then there's George Bush Jr. I could say, "With the exception of the war in Iraq...," but the war in Iraq has completely dominated his presidency! If there'd been no war in Iraq, Bush would have had to have come up with something else because that would have been a really big void! I'll give the Bush administration credit for bringing the antitrust case against Microsoft to a close. That was a good thing. But how many soldiers have gone to Iraq and not returned? How many went and returned but now only have one arm or one leg? No one will mourn George Bush Jr. when he dies. If "democracy" in the United States continues to bring us presidents like Brush Sr., Clinton, and Bush Jr., then maybe it's time we find our own Saddam to lead us to real greatness.
